Tuning the ribosome in health and disease

Protein synthesis is essential for all cellular processes, and it is pivotal to understand how protein synthesis is regulated to facilitate differentiation and establish cellular identity. Importantly, the translation system is deregulated or hijacked in many diseases, and understanding how deregulated protein synthesis contributes to the development of disease may facilitate new
therapeutic approaches.
In this seminar, examples of disease-mediated changes to protein synthesis will be discussed with a focus on colorectal cancer. Furthermore, early attempts to develop compounds capable of targeting specific disease-related ribosome subtypes presented.
